This jean is based on the first jean to have the second - left - back pocket, which was added in 1901. It's sometimes called the fifth pocket. As with many innovations on the 501 jeans, this additional pocket probably became standard on the jean because of consumer requests or changes in the way men wore their work pants. All records were lost forever in the great San Fransisco earthquake and fire of 1906, making the fifth pocket a thing of minor mystery.
